“Tyler’s Ultimate” Open

About This Project

This was a seminal moment in the evolution of food television. As late as 2005, much of food television was still of the instructional, 3-camera, live-to-tape variety. See here for an example. By the mid 2000’s, that style was beginning to show its age. With the introduction of (relatively) affordable HD cameras and post-production workflows, TV producers started to embrace a more “film like” sensibility to producing television and food television was no different. “Tyler’s Ultimate” really started to stretch the traditional notion of how you showcase food instruction and preparation. I wanted the show graphics package to reflect this stylistic departure and crafted an open incorporating shots of Tyler shopping for ingredients, interacting with fans and cooking on set with energetic, gritty typography layered in over the footage. The result was a dynamic fresh take on food television art direction and the series was subsequently nominated for several Emmys for Outstanding Culinary Program.
